Amanda flew from Seattle to Bangkok, Thailand on April 30, 2004 to teach English as a second language. She got the gig through CIEE, an organization that helps people study, work or volunteer abroad. Read on to see what Amanda has to say as she dives into this experience.

I went on a vacation but you will have the check back to read about it. Teeheehee!!

I bet there is some nice rock climbing over on those cliffs. Posted by Hello

These guys guard the gates to a temple that sits a top 500 stairs. You can get pretty close, obviously, but they have a tendancy to attack people carrying plastic bags (they think they have bananas) or anything gold in color. Posted by Hello

The road behind me will take you into Myanmar if you dare drive down it. Check out my hair blowing in the wind. It was really ripping that day! Posted by Hello

That was the biggest frigin spider I have ever seen in real life (except the zoo of course). Holy majoly it's taken over my house!!!I was just sitting there calmly watching my movie while eating some ice cream when I noticed something moving out of the corner of my eye. Now, I'm thinking it's just a house lizard or the gecko, no big deal. Oh no, not even close. When I looked over my stomach jumped and my face felt hot and I basically freaked out. That's right, I moved to Thailand and was attacked by those huge ass spiders from Aracniphobia!!!! AAAAAAAAaaaaaaaa!!!!

Luckily it was just sitting there for now. Right, let me tell ya, when that thing decided to move, holy crap it moved fast and straight at me no less. Bareling over the screen door it came almost flying towards me. As it hit the curtain I jumped and I mean jumped. Holy shhhh it was coming for me!!! Luckily when I moved it moved in the opposite direction. I'm sorry I said moved again didn't I. He flew in the opposite direction. Now I don't know where it is. Great, this thing is going to attack me in the night. Mommy!!!!

Okay, I spot it on the floor. Now, I could try to push it along so it runs out the front door but that could be tricky. If I miss and it sprints in the wrong direction it could nest under the sofa and then I would never want to sit there again. No good. The back door then. I open up the back door deciding the spider problem took precedence over the mosquito problem. As I poked it with the broom it did what I figured it would do. Sprint in the wrong direction and dissapear. Great!!! Now where the heck is it. Crap.

I spent about twenty minutes looking for it and finally decided to hit the sack. Could I sleep? Oh no. If it didn't stay downstairs where I was looking then it must be upstairs, in my bedroom? Did I mention this thing was big. The body didn't seem like much but the legs spaned at least four inched. Oh yeah, this is a big one. Eventually I was able to fall asleep.

This morning I think I heard it scurry under something as I walked to the ladies room. You can hear these move!!! Yuuuuuck!! By the time I get back to the house the entire inside will probably be nothing be web. It's going to take over. God, please let the gecko eat this thing. Help!!!!!

Turns out I don't really like teaching. Well, at least I don't like teaching 50 kids of which 20 to 30 don't want to be there. Not much fun. Every Sunday evening and Monday morning I'm in a bad mood as my brain tries to assess the future success of my lesson plan for the week. So far I have had four bad weeks and two good weeks. Those are not very good odds.

On a good note, I'm beginning to venture out on my own around town. Turns out the teachers around here don't do anything in their free time. Most just go to work, go home, eat and sleep. That's not much fun. So, I found a web site that has some great information on Chaing Rai that I'm going to start trying out. Hopefully this will make my stay a bit more interesting.
